CHARSADDA, Aug 2: Two persons sustained injuries when unidentified assailants hurled a hand grenade at the office of a non-governmental organisation here in the small hours of Thursday.

According to police and local residents, the assailants hurled a hand grenade at the office of Helping Hand, situated on Charsadda-Mardan Road. Niaz Beg, manager of the NGO, and field worker Abdul Qayum sustained injuries in the grenade attack as they were present at the office at the time of attack, they added. The injured were taken to district headquarters hospital in Mardan.

Charsadda DPO Mohammad Nisar Ali Marwat and SHO Rohan Zeb visited the office of the NGO. The DPO said that stern action would be taken against those, who were found involved in attacks on the offices and employees of welfare organisations.

He said that attack on the offices of NGOs would not be tolerated. The elements involved in such attacks would be brought to justice, he added.

Meanwhile, Taliban shot dead a brother of the head of a local peace committee in Akhorwal area of semi-autonomous Darra Adamkhel, sources told Dawn on Thursday.

They said that Nauman Afridi, a brother of Momin Khan Afridi, was killed by Taliban on Wednesday night. Taliban claimed responsibility for the killing and threatened to continue fighting against the pro-government peace lashkar till withdrawal of security forces from the area.

Sources said that skirmishes continued between the Tariq Afridi group of Taliban and peace lashkar of Momin Afridi to establish their control in the area. Both the rival groups belonged to Akhorwal area of Darra Adamkhel.

In Swabi, a public sector educational institution was blown up by unidentified militants on Wednesday night.

According to police, explosive material was planted at the veranda of a government primary for boys in Kadi area. The explosive material went off made a big bang, awakening residents of the area, they added.

All the three classrooms of the school were destroyed and its boundary wall developed cracks in the blast. About 150 students were enrolled in the school.

The head teacher of the school was immediately informed by the watchman. The district education officer also visited the school and assessed the damage inflicted on its building.

It was second incident of its kind during Ramazan. The number of schools, destroyed in blasts, in the district has reached to 21.
