KARACHI: A British tabloid has allegedly uncovered a visa scam involving Pakistan's Olympic contingent.

According to the investigation, a group of travel agents and politicians are involved in the scam which allows anyone to travel with the Pakistani contingent as support staff if they pay a certain amount of money.

Fake passports, travel documents, a visa for two months and a letter from the Pakistan Sports Board claiming that the person is part of Pakistan's Olympic support staff can all be arranged for around one million Pakistani rupees (7000 pounds), it was reported.

Abid Chodhary, the politician and Dream Land travel agency were allegedly involved.

The British and Pakistani authorities have been notified. Pakistan's advisor to the Prime Minister on interior, Rehman Malik, said that the relevant people have been informed and will be looking into the matter.

Malik has formed a joint investigation team to investigate the scam. The team would include officials from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

The Director General (DG) FIA would head the investigation team.

Eight employees of National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) have been suspended and Chairman Nadra Tariq Malik has  has ordered inquiry into the matter.

Meanwhile, a Pakistani official, while talking to DawnNews, rubbished the story as an attempt to discredit Pakistan. He also added that it was not possible for anyone to sneak in as part of Pakistan's contingent as there were proper checks conducted and a lot of documentation required.

I think everybody should check out the Scam Detector app. I believe they're online as well.
Nish Jul 24, 2012 02:45pm
Very well said, the same dilemma is faced by Indian leaders. They are confused about with whom to talk, whom to trust and who is incharge. Is it the ISI chief, the army chief, the president or the prime minister? Nobody takes responsibility of the: 1. Passports issued by their government (e.g. to Abu Jundal), 2. Their own citizens (e.g. Kasab, Hafiz, etc) 3. Their own diplomats. 4. Their own army personal found in India. ....etc,
Syed Faisal Jul 23, 2012 03:40pm
Let me tell you one more thing. This type of scandals includes high level officals involvements, But we know; only few peoples from lower grades will get arrest. Only Judicial inquiry can uncover the real truth. And media should raise their voices for judicial inquiry for this.
dhk Jul 23, 2012 04:03pm
there seems to be ever lower point. depressing although not surprising.
AmirDewani Jul 23, 2012 04:20pm
This exposure will further tarnish the image of this Islamic Republic of Pakistan. However, they can avoid the damage if the minister concerned is sacked/kicked out and his name be put on the Exit control list along with those concerned. But, such sort of timely action can't be done. When you have a basket of rotten eggs, it is difficult to even think to sort out even those partly rotten. Because rotten eggs are never rotten partially. Such harsh words fall short of some more to condemn criminal activities, knowing as we do that it will create problems for those otherwise simple citizens to travel internationally. People may even doubt about the diplomatic passports of your government. For my satisfaction, please at least check the passport of the minister concerned and the functionaries under him to give confidence to the other countries for the sake of this beautiful country and the equally beautiful people of Pakistan. Looking to the recent scandles of some of the nasty cricketers, I say those proven guilty must go to jails irrespective of positions or party affiliations. I write these comments because those of our brother living abroad in the USA, Canada, UK and even those going for Hajj have to face the 'ear-poisoning -music ' on such revelations which most of those inside may not know. And, these are my personal views subject to the miscreants being proven guilty as per the law.

visa scam reported in british what pakistani media is doing????????????????????talk shows
Riaz Murtaza Jul 23, 2012 04:40pm
What has happened to the Pakistanis ! No more good news coming. There is always some kind of scam disclosed everyday. No one is afraid from the laws. It seems the authorities itself are involved in such incidents.
jd shami Jul 23, 2012 03:35pm
Once proven, this Abid chodhry must be prosecuted and sent to jail. Enough is enough, Pakistan's name is on the line.

GMKhan, you are right. I agree with you.
Syed Faisal Jul 23, 2012 03:33pm
Nothing surprising. In our country, unfortunately, 100% corruption. What illegal action you wants to do, you can. Passport ? , ID Card? , Plot computerized document?, Take out drugs from airport?, Anything you say. No regret. Whole system is corrupt. I wish why Pakistani reports don’t do this undercover reporting? A revolution is required; no one is capable in Pakistan in current scenario who can drag it to right direction Muhammad Canada

not a bad build up at all - to blame Pakistan incase something happens at the Olympics
zeeshan Jul 23, 2012 03:14pm
ok now this is pathetic if true...being a pakistani is really becoming an embarrassment!! hopefully this will turn out to be a false story...
aman Jul 24, 2012 07:46am
Which Proves how Indian Abu Hamza can go to Saudi Arabia with Pakistani passport - But the problem is Pakistan do not accept his fault even proven, this is the biggest irony. Once they will feel and accept that yes this is blunder we are doing only then reforms can be done. Doctor cant prescribe medicine to patience unless patient tell yes i have problem.
Jawwad Jul 23, 2012 02:16pm
If they can do the scams in Hajj schemes what's stopping them from resorting to these tactics? Every event in life to them looks an opportunity to make quick buck. Has this not been going on for many years now? Support staff defecting in foreign countries while on sports tours?
bangash Jul 23, 2012 02:08pm
Most Pakistanis want to escape the country by hook or by crook.
bilal Jul 23, 2012 04:41pm
we all hope that its a false news and lets not give another jolt to a nation which is waiting for a good news from sports field , but if its true no one to be left without punishment
zoxo100 Jul 24, 2012 07:12am
Have a corrupt leader at the top and you get 'hum khayal' group i.e all like him all the way down. Bring one honest leader and the rot stops no one under will dare to suh a thing because the honest leader will not protect him-thats why only Imran Khan is the last hope-by the way I never cared for any party in the past but with the current dire situation I want to step forward and vote a decent guy for nce. Gilani was convicted by court and he was protected by the leader with 30 lakh a month salary and immunity from cases against him. why these corrupt always disgrace us in England where so many hard working pakistani's live.
True Pakistani Jul 23, 2012 04:01pm
- it is quite expected. in fact it would be indescribably surprising if there was NO scam.
Sam Jul 26, 2012 12:27pm
I agree. Visa scams happen all over . India had the biggest B@ visa scandal in USA , biggest in the world. We like to think we are bad. L

GMKhan Jul 23, 2012 04:13pm
Well done Pakistan, you have done it again., made news that no other country in the world could. Dishonesty, cheating, corruption you have written a book. Rehman Malick's committees are routine- at the end no one is accountable.
Nasir Jul 23, 2012 04:11pm
When the Head of the organization is Rehman Malik then this is very much expected.
Overseas Pakistani Jul 23, 2012 04:57pm
This is really bad news for Pakistani passport holders who travel aboard. Pakistanis were already subject to extra scrutiny. Now they will face lot more harassment & embarrassment.. Pakistan has become a very corruption country. The corruption is at every level. There is lot more corruption at the highest levels. That is why removing corruption is a lost cause in Pakistan. Now corruption has become part of Pakistani life & culture.. So Sad.
Dilawer A. Jul 23, 2012 05:06pm
Perfect response to this news article. Rehman Malik makes more investigation teams then a baker can make cookies. I am wondering if Pakistan would ever emerge as a country better than Rwanda or Congo. Let's hope that someday it will.
Dilawer Amjad Jul 23, 2012 05:13pm
Don't you think that Rehman Malik is root cause of all the problems. Just think that his entire existence is based on crisis management. He would never get any lime light if there is no crisis to manage. Let's take a look at the number of committees he formed and find out the results of those committees. What is average cost and duration of those meetings and what are the results. This is not rocket science but someone needs to think that what is the cost and benefit of keeping Rehman Malik or any special advisor in his job if all the decisions are on ad hoc basis. He would never make any process so that the next oerson's job in his position will be a better fit to the growing needs.
Dilawer Amjad Jul 23, 2012 05:16pm
There is no crimanl justice system in Pakistan. This is the root cause of people taking law in their own hands. Read the News in this paper on honor killings and other criminal news. We should not be shocked any more since this is a natural outcome of what we have in the country.
Sam Jul 23, 2012 05:17pm
Its the same method which Pakistanis use to get student visas for UK and Canada.Students pay 1% of the bank statement amount to broker who prepares verifiable fake bank statements.Once the bank statement requirement is furnished the applicant easily get the student visa. Its very normal and happening in Pakistan since many years now.
Rev Eldrick Lal Jul 23, 2012 05:25pm
Bravo Pakistan! Another inglorious chapter in the history of the nation. I do not understand why people give that much preference to ENGLAND and waste their time, energy and sources. They better stay and work hard in their own homeland or try somewhere else. For instance, middle eastern countries. They can proceed with proper documentation and can gain access into middle eastern countries via proper channels. Please stop these scams and let other honest Pakistani's live with integrity and respect.
M K S Jul 23, 2012 05:27pm
Forget the corrupt governments and the offices. When the common man realises that 'bribery' is a social evil that paves way for the moral downfall of any society, it is only then we can see some changes around. The idea and thought that you can buy yourself in to any position needs to be gone once and for all. And I'm afraid the common man has to take the blame here as well, whatever be the circumstances. I know there will be people saying that one can't get any work done if we don't give any 'kharcha paani' has become an unnecessary evil and has to stop.
Javaid Jul 23, 2012 05:45pm

What would be the future of Pakistan? If we here these types of news every new day. There is no one who is sincere for the country, everyone is doing illegal work either it is a common or a politician. May ALLAH bless this country and guide the people of this country. AMEEN.

The Hajj scandle and the election scandle is next, we will hear.
mohammad Jul 23, 2012 06:29pm
What is there to be shocked at? This is what we Pakistanis are and this is what normally happens in everyday life in Pakistan. Just because we happen to be outside Pakistan does not mean that Pakistanis inside and outside Pakistan are no more dishonest, corrupt, cheat, fraud and liars. Come on.
Zia R Qureshi Jul 24, 2012 09:24am
Since the news is not fully confirmed - its considered meaningless. We are used to these media hypes as there is no honest leadership at top level and everyday we come across real or make up stories like these to tarnish the image of our targeted nation. Besides this, under cover people from other countries are coming over to Pakistan and settling in without any problems or issues. They all have fake names and ID's - why are they not been questioned or part of publications ? This is the holy month of Ramadan and what image are we creating for this nation - the least we can do is to uncover this plot and if anyone is found guilty, he should be severely punished. England, of course is not a go to place specially in recession - you never know that the 7K Pounds are being shared by both ends. Maybe Middle Eastern countries would be a much better option. Its time that someone steps up and take charge, enhance and upgrade the national image and provide relief to the sufferings of the nation - may God bless the new leadership - amin Zi@ - well wisher from US
Kamran Jul 23, 2012 06:38pm
Welldone Pakistani, We all are very proud of you, I live in Uk and this news is making headlines today and unbelievable out of 128 countries we pakistani,s always top the negative news, i guess we are one of the worst nations in the world and we blame the whole world for targetting us always, im sure we as pakistani,s should go through express dry cleaning, it might help !!!
Dilawer Amjad Jul 23, 2012 06:41pm
This News mean more difficulty for Pakistanis going through the immigration at World's airports. More scrutiny more nasty looks more interrogation and more signs of distrust. At my company in the USA, they were defining the terms of low IQs and the discussion ended up with laughter as a new term was described below moron and that was "Pakistani". How low do we need to fall before deciding that It is time to say enough is enough.
SWLONG Jul 23, 2012 06:48pm
This just goes to show and confirm how desperate Pakistanis are to escape the corruption and lawlessness that has plagued this country.
zaman Jul 23, 2012 06:57pm
Even if this story is true ,it is only for a few thousand pounds. That does not make it morally right and it gives the western media another chance to malign Pakistan. However it should be put into context. Recently it has been discovered that the Americans and British banks have been wrongly selling insurances and mortgages and making billions of us dollars in profit but no body can prosecute them as they deal in billions of dollars and bring in billions of dollars and pounds to their governments in taxes. So this corruption happens in other countries too and on a bigger scale.
Cyrus Howell Jul 23, 2012 07:03pm
Tip of the iceberg.

Shaukat Jul 23, 2012 07:38pm
why can't an opportunity be provided in a fare way and people get there without using wrong means. This is failure of England and Pakistan together. They have made the process so difficult that people use back doors and are exploited by the politicians and officials etc Govt should review there procedures and make the process easy so that all interested in games can visit there!
Gerry D'Cunha Jul 23, 2012 07:43pm
I am speechless !! Has the authority thought of the Pakistani communities who have to face the local British people when such scandals are repeated about Pakistanis? These people have tarnish the image of Pakistan and their religion.

Not only people in the government majority of our people are corrupt.
Umer S Jul 23, 2012 07:55pm
Such scams are not unique to Pakistan. Its just that Pakistan is under the microscope right now and any negative news is blown out of proportion. I hope this issue is sorted out in time and it does not affect Pakistan's attendance in the Olympics.

Muhammad Ammad Jul 23, 2012 11:58pm
This news is literally very sad, but i want to tell you that now these guys are too much in making up. How can you get into olympics without being renown athlete first? There are thousand legitimite athletes are sititng in world who can't make to olympics just becuase they are not very good in sports and can't qualify for olympics, so how can any XYZ can be part of olympic team by just holding fake passport? Secondly, British High comission can't grant visa on the basis of forged document. Here i only see is you can have Fake Passport by bribing officials, which is true, but adding olympic story and creating extra buzz does not extend any sense to me. Ammad from USA.
glala Jul 24, 2012 12:38am
This is really scary. The Pakistani team should be banned from competing at all.

Riaz, There is plenty of good news in Pakistan. The Pakistanis are the most resilient nation in the world. There is a lot of individual brilliance out there. However, media is afraid that you are not interested in that "no-news" content. Please let media knows that you want to read stories about the unsung heroes of Pakistan. They will listen to you.

Syed Jul 24, 2012 01:15am
What do you expect? They want to make money from any thing possible, and any which way possible. I am not surprised at all. They have no sympathy for the people and the Country and yet the people are electing them to rule them and punish them for their choice. Go figure !!! We do have a choice soon if we have learned any thing from our choices we must be more sincere to the Country not the People or politicians in choosing those who we want to Govern our Country for the next few terms. Otherwise Pakistan is doomed for ever.

The worst part is that many of these who go illegaly by way of fake documentation never return to Pakistan and stay abroad even after the main team returns home.

Some body should have taken note when mr Rehman Malick while commenting on the Pakistani pass port of Abu Jundal, held in India, openly declared that there is nothing to investigate as Pakistani passports can be easily prepared and forged and any one can have them cheap.
edwin Jul 24, 2012 05:53am
Mr. Amir Dewani, yours is wishful thinking, here in Pakistan all inquiries are just to hoodwink us gullible Pakistanis. Here all the high ups can do any wrong and get away with it. The is a lot to be done for honest dealings in Pakistan, but for that you need honest men at the helm and we have few of them, who are not allowed to work freely. The day we have honest leaders our country can bee he best in the world.
