Woman killed

MURREE, July 17: A woman was killed and another injured when a speeding car hit them while they were sitting along the Expressway near Dhak, Mussiarri.

Sanam Bibi, a resident of Jawa, died on the spot while the other woman was shifted to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Murree in a serious condition. The driver of the car escaped. However, the police have registered a case against him and impounded the vehicle.—Correspondent

Terror suspect arrested

ISLAMABAD, July 17: A suspected suicide bomber was arrested during a joint raid by capital and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police in Sabzi Mandi area on Tuesday, sources told Dawn.

Earlier, the KP police had got hold of a CD which is presumably carrying an interview of the suspected suicide bomber. When the police further investigated they came to know that the bomber in the CD was alive and hiding in Islamabad.

They shared the information with their counterparts in Islamabad, which led to the arrest of the suspect, who was later shifted to undisclosed location for interrogation.—Staff Reporter

Arms smuggling bid foiled

TAXILA, July 17: Wah Cantt police on Tuesday foiled a bid to smuggle arms and ammunition from Peshawar to Hazara and arrested one person. Addressing a press conference here Sub-divisional Police officer DSP Raja Taifour Akhter said a police team, acting on a tip-off, stopped a car (LZW-9075) near Mohra chowk on Hazara road and during search recovered three pistols, two repeaters, 3,520 rounds of Kalashnikov and two  magazines from hidden parts of the vehicle.

Responding to a question, he said that during preliminary interrogation, the accused said he belonged to an inter-provincial gang of arms smugglers and was carrying the illegal consignment Peshawar to Manshera via Wah Cantt. —Correspondent

Bid to smuggle heroin foiled

RAWALPINDI, July 17: The Anti-Narcotics Force on Tuesday foiled an attempt to smuggle seven-kg heroin to Spain from Islamabad and arrested an air passenger at Benazir Bhutto International Airport. According to the ANF sources, Ghulam Murtaza, a resident of Lahore, was acting suspiciously before checking in at Emirates flight for Dubai, alerting the officials of the ANF who caught hold of him.

During baggage search, the staff recovered a large quantity of heroin concealed in the secret cavity of his suitcase. Later, he was shifted to the police station for further investigation.

During interrogation, the he told the police that his destination was Spain via Dubai and Holland. He said he was to deliver the consignment to a person in Spain where he worked at a restaurant as a waiter. —Staff Reporter

CM visit to Attock

ATTOCK, July 17:  The Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif again postponed his visit to Attock on Tuesday where he was scheduled to hold open katchery and preside over a meeting on law and order. Besides, he was also to inspect some important development schemes of the district, it has been learnt. Earlier, the Punjab chief minister was due to visit the district on June 27.— Correspondent

House looted

RAWALPINDI, July 17: In one of the biggest robberies, four men looted a family of jewellery worth Rs11.4 million, Rs2 million in cash and electronic goods, police said on Tuesday.

Talat Farooq Lone, a resident of Lane No. 6 Peshawar Road, told police said that somebody rang the doorbell of his house. When he opened the door, four persons forced their way into the house and held the inmates at gunpoint. He said the gunmen locked his family members in a room, and made off with jewellery weighing 200 tolas, prize bonds and foreign currency valuing Rs2 million, three BlackBerry phones, five video cameras and five lap-top computers. Besides, the robbers also took away suitcases and clothes lying in the cupboards.

In another incident, three robbers looted Rs280,000 from a shop in Waris Khan police area. Raja Mohsin Raza, a resident of the Civil Line area, told police that four robbers entered his house and took away Rs100,000 cash, diamond earrings and three wrist watches.—Staff Reporter
