THE National University of Modern Languages (NUML) has campuses across the country, two of which are functioning in Sindh province at Karachi and Hyderabad.

The campuses serve language learners across the province, but both campuses are in major cities of the province and are located near each other. However, northern Sindh remains badly lacking in one. Though many aspiring students who wish to make their career in English and English literature are willing to join the university, but they have to travel to Hyderabad or Karachi to quench their thirst for knowledge. It is difficult for students to undertake a 10-hour journey to reach Karachi and an eight-hour journey to reach Hyderabad.

In these hard times, it is difficult for the poor and the middle-class to make both ends meet.

Having no hostel for students, especially female students, is one of the biggest disadvantages to continue education.

NUML doesn’t only offer degree programmes, but it also offers short language courses. Students who want to polish their language skills face a lot of problems in going to Hyderabad or Karachi.

I should mention here that Sukkur is a central point which connects at least 10 districts of Sindh province: Ghotki, Khairpur, Naushero Feroze, Nawabshah, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Shikarpur, Larkana, Qambar at Shahdadkot and Sukkur itself. It also covers the southern region of Punjab and some parts of Balochistan.

The institutes that come into the jurisdiction of these 10 districts are as follows: Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Medical College, IBA Sukkur, SZABIST Larkana, Chandka Medical College, Quaid-i-Awam Engineering and Technology University, People’s Medical College, Shah Abdul Latif University, degree colleges of the region, postgraduate studies centre, Law colleges of the region and many other private colleges and institutions.

Sukkur is near Pano Aqil Cantonment where many colleges and schools of the provincial government serve the children of armed forces’ officials and the local population.

The country needs language teachers, interpreters, translators and media persons who can serve in call centres in bulk quantity.

I request the authorities concerned to establish a campus in Sukkur for interior Sindh candidates, southern Punjab, Balochistan along with cantonment troops. This will be a great service to the youth of the country. Besides, it will also provide them with new avenues for jobs and services.
