KARACHI, Dec 17: The repeated postponement of the teachers’ selection committee meeting at the Federal Govt Urdu Arts College is causing concern among the faculty members.

Teachers at the college on Tuesday urged President Pervez Musharraf, federal education minister and the head of the higher education commission to look into the matter, as, they said, a number of teachers had been deprived of their rights because of the repeated postponement of the meeting.

Cases of promotion, move-overs and regularization of 37 teachers have remained in pending, while the committee has failed to meet despite notification, they added.

According to sources in the teachers’ society of the college, the meeting of the selection committee was postponed five times since Sept 7, 2001.

The committee is headed by Karachi University vice-chancellor, while principal of the college and some officials of the federal government are its members.

It was claimed that two female teachers, who were waiting for promotions, were recently retired after they reached the age of superannuation. Many of the teachers have been working in the same grade for the last 16 years, a press release of the society said.
