PESHAWAR, Dec 16: The court of the additional district and sessions judge, Saleem Khan, on Monday convicted a person of killing a man and his son, and sentenced him to death on two counts.

The court ruled that the prosecution had proved its case.

The defendant, Younus, had killed Khadim Hussain and his son Barkat Hussain at Budhani area on a petty issue of purchasing cigarettes from a shop.

The prosecution said that Barkat ran the shop and had a dispute with Younus over five rupees. Younus killed Barkat and when Barkat’s father went to Younus, he also killed him.

The complainant in the case was Shoukat Hussain, son of Khadim Hussain. The complainant’s counsel argued that the evidence of witnesses had clearly proved the guilt of the defendant and he deserved no leniency.

SHO SUMMONED: The court of the judicial magistrate, Safiullah Khan, summoned the SHO (Investigation) of the Hayatabad police in a contempt of court case on Monday.

The court directed the SHO to appear on Tuesday and clarify his position.

Razi Gul, a resident of Peshawar, filed an application, stating that the officials of the Hayatabad police had seized his vehicle on Oct 17. He said that on Dec 4 the court directed the police to return his vehicle after furnishing two sureties of Rs300,000.

Sine then, Mr Gul said, he had been visiting the police station but the SHO was reluctant to return the vehicle.

Advocate Habibur Rehman appeared for the applicant and argued that the SHO had not been complying with the court orders which, he added, amounted to committing contempt of court.

BILLBOARDS: The police have removed all the billboards and life-size portraits hung on the city cinema houses and booked scores of people from video-game shops here on Monday.

The NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani has ordered the police to pull down hoarding, painted with voluptuous portraits outside the cinema houses all over the city.

After a ban imposed by the chief minister during the Ramazan on the non-existent pubs and gambling dens, the police had become over-active to prove their performance.

The cable-operators, who are doing a roaring business, will have to bear the brunt of this drive.

The police have launched its campaign a day before the meeting of MMA central leadership here on Tuesday.
