I want to approach the higher authorities of the University of Karachi through your reputed daily with the request to address the issue of loadshedding faced by the Dr Mahmud Husain Library, the central library of the university.

The other day I was studying in the library when suddenly the electricity went off. I thought it would return soon and sat there for a long time, but it did not. I asked the library staff if there was a generator facility available for the library, to which they replied in the negative.

The weather of Karachi these days makes the situation even more unbearable. It is extremely difficult for students to study in such conditions.

I request the authorities concerned to do something for the uninterrupted supply of electricity to the library so that students can continue their studies without interruption.

Exam system

Sir, The examination system of the University of Karachi is not up to date, as compared to the other government or private universities. In Karachi University, students have only one chance to clear the paper of the semester in a year. But if we take the example of NED University, students can take part in the examination of any paper twice in a year. If they have not gained good marks or are unable to pass the exam, they can still give the paper and try and gain better marks.

The main reason behind KU students clearing their four-year degree in five or more years is that they don’t have the chance to clear their failed papers.

I request the chancellor and vice-chancellor of the university to take practical steps in this regard and give students a fair chance to clear their papers and gain better marks so that they can pass out of the university in four years.

Pile of waste

Sir, A huge pile of waste has accumulated at UCs-10 and 11, Nishtar Road. The entire area looks unhygienic because sanitary workers do not pick up the garbage regularly. Whenever the wind blows, motorcyclists are assailed with plastic bags and other waste materials. The foul smell emanating from the filth is unbearable.

The initial stretch of Nishtar Road has wide footpaths for pedestrians. But the pavements have been turned into parking lots and places for dumping garbage.

Can KMC officials look into the matter as soon as possible?

Street vendors

Sir, I would like to draw the attention of the authorities concerned towards the issue of street vendors in Karachi. These vendors are mostly concentrated near schools, hospitals, bus-stops, amusement parks and other public places.

However, the food which street vendors sell is mostly unhygienic, contaminated and of low quality. While preparing the food, many vendors do not wash their hands. Hence, it is fair to assume the food which they sell can cause diseases.

I hope that the authorities will look into this issue. The government should try to hire food inspectors to check the quality of food which the street vendors are selling in the interest of public health.
