KARACHI, May 11: A young man was shot dead near Labour Square within the remit of the SITE-B police station late on Thursday night, police said.

They added that Syed Zain Hasan, 24, son of Mehmoodul Hasan, was going home with a friend, Nadeem, in a car when they were intercepted by two armed riders near Labour Square. The armed men opened fire on the car and sped away.

Zain sustained two gunshot wounds to the head and neck and died on the spot, but Nadeem survived the attack unhurt.

The body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

SHO Shafiq Tanoli said the victim had gone to a factory in Baldia to meet Nadeem and came under attack when they were returning home.

The police quoted the victim’s friend as saying that the armed men were not robbers as they did not take away anything from them.

The SHO said it could be a targeted killing on sectarian grounds, but it would be too early to arrive at that conclusion. Investigation was under way, he said.

The victim was a resident of Federal B Area’s Block 13.

The police handed over the body to his heirs. They said the family would lodge an FIR after the burial of the victim.
