PESHAWAR/SWABI, April 30: A policeman was killed and another received injuries in a bomb blast in Ghari Suhbat Khan on the suburbs of Peshawar on Monday.

An official of Khazana police station said that four policemen, led by head constable Gul Zar Khan, were targeted by suspected militants with a remote controlled explosive device when they were passing near a girls college in the area.

Two policemen were injured in the blast. “The bomb was planted in a manhole. It shows that the detonators were present near the blast site,” he said.

He added that constable Javed Khan of Haryana village succumbed to his injuries in the hospital while head constable Gul Zar was under treatment at Lady Reading Hospital.

The bomb, the official said, weighed about one kilogram but it was very powerful. He said that police were under threat in the area but they were performing duty without any fear.

A case, he said, was registered against unidentified terrorists. However, no suspect was arrested so far.

In Swabi, another government-run school for girls was blown up by unidentified militants on Monday.

Police said that four improvised explosive devices were planted at government girls primary school in Mian Dheri. However, three of them went off while the fourth, planted at the veranda of the school building, didn’t explode and was later defused by bomb disposal squad.

The school building was destroyed. However, another adjacent middle school for girls remained safe. “Both the schools are situated inside one boundary wall,” said a teacher.

The three blasts occurred one after another during the night. The blats were so powerful that they were heard in far and wide of the district.

The watchman said that he was present on the occasion and he informed police and school teachers about the incident.
