LAHORE, March 7: Harbanspura police on Wednesday registered a ‘novel’ case against three persons for handing over cheques worth Rs900,000 of one party to another.

According to an official, Muhammad Rashid issued two cheques worth Rs900,000 to Muhammad Altaf in a business transaction.

Iqbal Town police registered a case against Rashid after the cheques were dishonoured a couple of months ago.

After getting bail in the cheque dishonour case, Rashid filed an application with Harbanspura police, asking the police to register a case against his business partner, Muhammad Aqdas, because he (Rashid) had given the cheques to him (Aqdas), but he had not asked him to hand these over to Altaf. “Without listening to Aqdas, Harbanspura police registered a case against him under Section 406 of the Pakistan Penal Code, a non-bailable offence, and arrested him for ‘keeping cheques’ as a guarantee,” Shahzad, a family member of Aqdas, told Dawn.

He said the police booked Altaf and another person in the case. “How can the police register a case against a person who kept the cheques and the one to whom the cheques were issued?” he asked.

Investigation officer Nasim Khan said the operations police had registered the case, but he would investigate it on merit.
