KARACHI, Feb 3: Sindh High Court Chief Justice Mushir Alam said on Friday that the judiciary must be free from executive control so that it could work properly as an institution of the state.
Speaking at a ceremony held to hand over cars to 49 district and sessions judges, the chief justice said that the judiciary in Pakistan was going through a historic phase. He said that despite meagre resources and tremendous pressure from various sections of society, judges were doing their best.Mr Alam said that an independent judiciary was an integral part of democracy, as in a democracy people had even more expectation from judges.
A judge had to exercise patience, he said, adding that an impatient judge could not be fair no matter how intelligent he was. He said that some decisions might provoke a few, but justice should be delivered regardless of consequences.
He said that the entire system would collapse if the judiciary stopped working properly.He thanked the Sindh government for arranging the cars for the district and sessions judges, adding that the transport issue was a longstanding problem of judges.
He said that shortages of judges in courts still existed but the issue had been taken up at the highest level and would soon be addressed.-PPI
