DAWN seems to be highly hopeful about early polls, saying this may help stabilise the wobbly democratic process (Jan 7).

Opposition parties want an early election, but the first thing they will be doing after winning the election will be to fight for ministries and portfolios.

They will not have the courage to demolish the feudal system. In their big rallies we did not hear about their economic planning. They blame the government for the collapse of large public enterprises but have not pointed out how they would salvage these billions of rupees’ worth sectors.

President Zardari in his interview said that these sectors have become weak and not bankrupt. If the opposition has any pragmatic plan to improve the situation in the country, they should immediately spell it out instead of waiting to come to power and then implement it.

It should ask the government to implement their economic plans during the leftover period of a few months to at least offer some relief to the suffering people and then go to the polls and see how overwhelming support they get. The national economy cannot be revived by political slogans.
