Sugar mills urged to start crushing

Published December 1, 2002

KARACHI, Nov 30: Industries and Production Minister Liaquat Ali Jatoi has advised the sugar mills to start crushing in the national interest and assured that their genuine problems will be solved at the highest level.

Talking to journalists after attending a briefing on PIDC here on Saturday, he said due to delay in crushing, not only the field was unnecessarily occupied by the sugarcane crop but the growers were also facing financial problems.

“The delay in crushing has delayed the sowing of wheat, which will affect its production and force the country to import wheat from abroad, putting extra burden on foreign reserves,” he observed.

Similarly, the small growers, who is badly needing money to buy cloths for their families and other things for the preparation of Eid, are also affected due to late crushing.

“I appeal sugar mills owners to start crushing of sugarcane in the national interest and allow sowing of wheat crop in time,” he said.—APP
