KARACHI, Jan 6: The combination of Tariq Rasheed Khan and Zeenat Azwer clinched the Zia Mahmood Pairs Bridge Tournament at Karachi Golf Club on Thursday evening.
The Tariq-Zeenat pair, in a brilliant session of play, mustered up 65 per cent to emerge on the top in the 96-pair competition. Tariq Rasheed with Raza Naqvi had also won this event last year.
Ghaffar Quraishi-Zulfiqar Quraishi secured 62.95 per cent to clinch the runners-up spot while EU Khawaja-Nasir Wahab were third with 62.75 per cent score.
Zia Mahmood, a Pakistan bridge luminary who was part of the US team which won the Bermuda Bowl in Sao Paulo (Brazil) last year, was the chief guest on the occasion.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Zia Mahmood said he was touched by the love and affection shown by many in bridge fraternity on his visit to Pakistan.
He advised Pakistan’s bridge players to get more international experience in order to improve their world standing.
He stated that Pakistani players were inherently talented and second to none except in experience. He remembered his partner for many years, the late Masood Salim with whom he overcame many an opposition.
Zia Mahmood and Masood Salim were part of the Pakistan team which reached the final of Bermuda Bowl on its debut in 1986 in the US.—APP
