RAWALPINDI: A chance discovery of oil in Rawalpindi Satellite Town came as a pleasant New Year gift to Pakistan yesterday morning. Chemical analysis of the discovered oil is being conducted at the Attock Oil Laboratories to determine whether it would be feasible to carry out proper oil drilling and explorations.

A tube well was being installed at the West Pakistan Government Agriculture Farm — about six miles north of here. When the tube well was put into operation yesterday, oil, instead of water, gushed out. Authorities were immediately contacted and experts were called from the Attock Oil Company.

The indications are that this is dead oil because it neither evaporates nor produces gas. The experts are expected to give their preliminary report by today.

The agricultural farm is located in the Potwar area where the Russians had predicted oil deposits.
