LARKANA, Nov 21: A large number of doctors took out a procession at the Chandka Medical College here on Monday in protest against Sunday's kidnapping from Jacobabad of two professors of the Dow University of Health Sciences and Ghulam Mohammad Mahar Medical College.

Viva-voce of anatomy of the first year of MBBS scheduled to be held at CMC on Monday has been postponed after the kidnapping of Prof Imtiaz Waggan and Assistant Prof Azhar Ali Shah.

They were to act as external examiners for the viva-voce examination, said Dr Badruddin Junejo, president of the Pakistan Medical Association's Larkana chapter.

The professors were kidnapped en route to Sukkur from Jacobabad and their car was found abandoned near Sabzi Mandi. New date for the examination would be announced later, Dr Junejo said.

The procession organised by doctors affiliated with the Chandka Teachers Association (CTA) started from the administration block of the college and terminated at the VIP road. A number of students also joined the protest.

CMC principal Prof Assadullah Mahar, CTA president Dr Akbar Soomro and Dr Junejo who led the march condemned the incident and said that after triple murder of doctors in Chak, the incident of kidnapping of two professors had further heightened fears among doctors of Sindh.

They urged the government to ensure early recovery of the kidnapped doctors and said they would keep up pressure on the government through protests and boycotts to make it recover the hostages.

Doctors also boycotted OPD assignments in CMC hospital on a call given by the Larkana chapter of the PMA.

The Jacobabad chapter of the PMA held an emergency general body meeting at the civil hospital with vice-president of PMA Sindh Dr A.G. Ansari in the chair to condemn kidnapping of professors.

Addressing the meeting, president of PMA Jacobabad Abdul Rasheed Memon, Dr Gul Muhammad Buriro and others said that the doctors' kidnapping was a shameful act and highly condemnable.

They said the law and order conditions in Jacobabad had gone from bad to worse and doctors of Jacobabad were feeling themselves insecure after the kidnapping of their colleagues.

They said that the administration was doing nothing to curb kidnappings and other crimes, which had become a routine in the town. They warned of strong protest if the doctors were not released.

Police have sop far failed to find any clue about the kidnapped doctors.

In Sukkur, male and female doctors of Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Medical College held demonstrations in front of the main gate of the college, the office of DIG police Sukkur and the press club.

Dr Rafique Soomro, Dr Ismail Makoa nd Dr Zulfiqar Ahmed Mahar who led the protest warned of holding similar demonstrations across the country if the kidnapped doctors were not recovered within two days.

No case about the kidnapping of doctors has so far been registered at Saddar police station Jacobabad from whose jurisdiction the doctors were kidnapped.
