HYDERABAD, Oct 31: Hyderabad district's infrastructure sustained a loss of over Rs3 billion during the last monsoon.

Ejazul Hasan, an Executive District Officer (EDO), told the Asian Development Bank's Project Officer Umer bin Zia and Resource Person Anser Ali here on Monday that the public sector infrastructure had lost Rs2 billion while the private sector's loss was Rs1.92 billion.

The briefing was a follow-up to the provincial government's directive last week to all departments to submit damage and need assessment reports of their units.

Public sector infrastructure includes roads, school and college buildings, health units, water supplying network and sewerage system while houses, industrial units, stored goods and crops fall in the private sector.

The third spell of rain in Hyderabad district, the EDO lamented, had wreaked havoc in the rural taluka by damaging properties and making it difficult to dewater Qasimabad and Latifabad areas because of its bowl shape.

The administration had initially established five relief camps for rain-displaced people, but only one at Sabzi Mandi was still operational and housing around 3,200 people, he EDO told the ADB delegation.

The district government, with the assistance of national and provincial disaster managements, NGOs and philanthropists, was providing food and medical facilities to the homeless. .

Mr Zia called for well-equipped and strengthened disaster management at district level to respond immediately at lower levels in future.

The meeting was attended by the executive district officers of different departments and officials of revenue, irrigation, police and other departments.
