Mills link crushing with sugar pricing

Published November 15, 2002

KARACHI, Nov 14: The sugar mills of Sindh has decided not to commence crushing season unless the government links sugarcane prices with refined sugar prices.

The decision was taken at an extra-ordinary general meeting of the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association, Sindh Zone, held here on Thursday to consider the government directives to start crushing from Nov 15, 2002.

The meeting resolved that since the sugar industry of Sindh, was in serious financial crisis, it cannot commence the sugarcane crushing season 2002-03, unless the sugarcane price is linked with sugar price.

It was further stated that fixing of sugarcane price in isolation has created grave economic anomaly pushing the sugar industry of Sindh in deeper disarray and suffering huge losses.
