KARACHI, Nov 13: The Karachi University Teachers’ Society has reiterated its demand for the removal of vice-chancellor Dr Zafar Saied Saify for his alleged anti-teacher actions and incompetence.

A general body meeting, chaired by KUTS president Sarwar Nasim and attended by over 140 members here on Tuesday, decided that teachers who are members of the University’s senate, syndicate and academic council would attend the statutory bodies’ meetings under protest.

Dr Yasmin Rashid, President Pakistan Medical Association and Joint Action Committee, who had come from Lahore on an special invitation, gave details of the movement of teachers and doctors who have been demonstrating in thousands in Punjab against the model university ordinance, denationalization, downsizing and formation of boards of governors in schools, colleges and hospitals.

She said education and health are basic rights of all the people but the government was raising fees in hospitals and colleges.

Dr Yasmin vowed to continue struggle even if she was dismissed from service. She demanded immediate release of Dr Amir Aziz and pointed out that treatment of patients was the fundamental duty of doctors and it should not form a basis for persecution.

Sarwar Nasim warned the authorities that if they tried to enforce the model university ordinance the teachers would shut down all universities in protest.—PPI
