PESHAWAR, Sept 28: One policeman was killed and three others received injuries when suspected militants attacked a patrolling party of law enforces on Haryana Road here on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Jalaluddin said that four law enforcers were patrolling Suhbat Khan Garhi area in a van when unidentified armed persons attacked them.

Constable Zulfiqar was killed and head constable Ali Khan, constable Inamullah and constable Tila Khan were injured in the attack, he said.

Funeral prayers for the deceased policeman were offered at Malik Saad Khan Police Lines. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Speaker Karamatullah Khan Chagharmati, Provincial Police Chief Fiaz Ahmed Khan Turo, Additional IGP Abdul Latif Khan Gandapur and other senior officials were present on the occasion. Later, his body was shifted to his village Garhi Suhbat Khan for burial.

Meanwhile, police foiled a bid to smuggle arms and ammunition from tribal areas to Sindh province and arrested two alleged smugglers at Kohat Road here on Wednesday.

Police said that they cordoned off different entry points in the limits of Bala Mani police station on a tip-off and intercepted a truck carrying weapons and ammunition.

They said that 21 Kalashnikovs, 34 pistols, six rifles, five detonators and 3,510 cartridges of different bores were recovered from the truck.

Police also arrested alleged arm smugglers Mohammad Sadiq and Saud, residents of Bara Shaikhan Peshawar. They told police that they had shifted the weapons from Darra Adamkhel to Karkhano Market and wanted to transport them to Sindh.

Also, Yakatoot police seized 80 kilograms hashish on Ring Road near Dir Colony Chowk. An official told Dawn that early in the morning a dumper vehicle was impounded on Ring Road and recovered narcotics from it but the driver managed to escape.
