SANGHAR, Sept 14: A breach developed a week ago in a saline water drain, three kilometres from here, has so far flooded Housing Society, Shahan Shah Colony, Royal City and Al-Mansoora Colony. More than 90 per cent of population have moved to safe places and the rest are waiting to be rescued.

The breach, which has not been plugged yet, threatens other parts of the city as well. More than 50 per cent residents of Civil Hospital colony, Model Town, Revenue colony, Dhak Para, Hur Colony, Talibul Moula colony and other low-lying areas have also evacuated to safe places after their areas were submerged in three feet water.

Some parts of the town, including areas near Degree College, EDO (education) offices, Civil Court and Nawab Shah Road are under six to seven feet water. Meanwhile, thousands of rain victims in different relief camps have been without food as district administration has stopped supply of food to camps for the past two days.

Many rain victims have taken shelter along roads and are living in the open. They have no tents and they are exposed to onslaught of mosquitoes and waterborne diseases.

Mohammad Ibrahim Khoso, a rain victim at a relief camp set up in a school, said that around 2,000 people in the camp faced shortage of drinking water and food.

He said that there was no power supply in the camp when they moved into it and despite swarms of mosquitoes in every room no anti-mosquito spray was carried out.

Suspension of road links to Hyderabad, Nawabshah and Mirpurkhas have created acute shortage of food, medicines, vegetables, fuel, milk and other essential items in the city. No vehicle but tractor-trolleys can trudge through flooded roads.

Activists of Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum have rescued many stranded people from Shahan Shah colony, Housing Society and Jam Nando Mari village and brought them to safe places.
