KARACHI, Aug 19: A young man was killed and three others were wounded in an armed clash between two groups in Korangi’s Chakra Goth area on Friday evening, police said.

They said that over half a dozen vehicles were also set on fire when violence broke out in the area.

They said that a group of young men were asking area traders to pull down shutters in protest against the killing of an area youth whose body, stuffed in a gunny bag, was found in the old city area in the morning.

However, the group faced resistance from some other group and the two sides fired into the air before sunset. After sunset, both groups exchanged heavy gunfire that left a young man dead, said DSP Fakhar-ul-Islam.

He said the body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.

An official at the medico-legal section of the JPMC said the deceased was identified as Arsalan, adding that three wounded persons were also shifted to the emergency unit.

As the police and Rangers took time to reach the affected area, some seven vehicles were set on fire within a few minutes after the clash.

An official at the central fire office said that miscreant torched three trucks, two cars, a bus and a motorbike. “But due to the intense firing our fire tenders could not reach the scene. An office of a political party was also set on fire in the violence,” he said.

The firing between the two groups continued for about two hours and finally the guns fell silent and the police succeeded in entering the affected areas. Backed by a heavy contingent of the Rangers, the police later cordoned off the area and launched a ‘search operation’.
