LAHORE, Aug 14: Ghalib Market police on Monday arrested a foreigner for his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run incident near Fawara Chowk on the Gulberg’s Main Boulevard in which two motorcyclists were injured.

The police said two youngsters -- Rashid and Zain -- were riding a bike when they were hit by a Vigo pick-up, driven by Mr Powel George, a citizen of New Zealand.

The bikers fell onto the ground and got injured. Rashid suffered severe fractures and was admitted to the Services Hospital.

Mr Powel, who has been on a work visa in Pakistan since 2006 and was traveling along with his wife, allegedly tried to speed away but was stopped at the next signal by the police and taken into custody.

The police impounded his vehicle, locked him up at the police station and registered a case against him. Ghalib Market circle ASP Fazal-i-Hamid said the suspect tried to flee after hitting the youngsters, who were also apparently speeding at the time of the incident.

Mr Powel, however, told media that he did not hit the bikers and that they actually lost their balance while speeding.

He said that his stance could be verified through thorough inspection of his vehicle, which he claimed, carried no scratches.
