LANDI KOTAL, Aug 7: Bullet-riddled bodies of two tribesmen were recovered in Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency on Sunday.

GASTRO: One person was killed and more than 300 others were hospitalised after gastroenteritis broke out in Malagori sub-tehsil of Jamrud in the Khyber Agency, sources said on Sunday.

Confirming the epidemic, Agency Surgeon Dr Abdul Qadoos said that health teams would be dispatched to the affected area today (Monday).

Locals said hundreds of gastro affected patients were admitted in Jamrud civil hospital while some were shifted to Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar.

They said epidemic broke out due to intake of contaminated water and unhygienic food purchased from local market before Iftar.

PROTEST: Dozens of Jamaat-i-Islami activists on Sunday staged a protest demonstration in Landi Kotal bazaar against loadshedding.

Holding banners and placards inscribed with slogans against excessive loadshedding, the protesters marched in the bazaar and later gathered at the press club.

Addressing the protesters, JI deputy general secretary, Zar Noor Afridi, alleged the Tribal Areas Electric Supply Company had subjected the residents of entire Khyber Agency to unscheduled long hours of loadshedding which had multiplied the miseries of local people.

He accused the officials at local grid station of accepting bribes from well off people in order to ensure uninterrupted power supply to their houses while the poor people were subjected to power cuts even at Iftar and Sehr timings.

Mr Afridi lamented that the frequent power outages had also resulted in acute shortage of water in the entire Khyber Agency and people were compelled to buy water from private water tankers.

Another local leader, Abdur Rauf, said loadshedding duration had exceeded all previous durations.

Mr Rauf warned of a complete shutter down strike in Landi Kotal and blockade of the Peshawar-Torkhum Highway for all types of traffic if the loadshedding timings were not regulated.

Meanwhile, local residents also complained that their electric appliances had gone out of order due to low voltage of electricity.

Ali Akbar, a resident of Mirdadkhel, told Dawn his deep freezer and a water sucking machine went out of order due to low voltage.

Azmat Ali, a medicine dealer, said most of his medicines were rendered ineffective as the refrigerator at his shop near the local hospital could not work properly due to frequent power cuts and low voltage.
