LAHORE, July 17: The Jamaat-i-Islami will express complete solidarity with the oppressed people of Balochistan on Tuesday (tomorrow) by staging a sit-in in Quetta and holding public meetings and rallies at major cities all over the country.

Arrangements for the day were finalized at a meeting chaired by party chief Syed Munawar Hasan here on Sunday.

Apart from the Quetta sit-in, the JI will hold public meetings in Karachi, Peshawar, Lahore, Hyderabad and Abbottabad to apprise the locals of the situation in Balochistan so as to seek public support for solving the issue.

Mr Hasan told the preparatory meeting that the people all over the country were concerned over the target killings and military operations in Balochistan. Hundreds of people, including women, were missing, and dead bodies of the people were being found frequently.

He said the people of Balochistan could not be satisfied merely by holding a federal cabinet meeting in Quetta.

The government, he said, had announced granting of rights to the Baloch but nothing had been done in this direction. The military operation was still continuing in Balochistan and dead bodies of abductees were found in far-flung areas. The writ of the government was nowhere to be found in the province, he said.

Mr Hasan said the people of Balochistan were patriotic and the JI was fighting the case of the Baloch people both in corridors of power and in the public.

Meanwhile, the party has proposed a 15-point code of ethics for Ramazan, including availability of essential items on cheap rates, creating an atmosphere conducive to the spirit of the holy month and ensuring celebration of a single Eidul Fitr all over the country.

Issued by secretary-general Liaquat Baloch, the code stressed upon the government to take solid measures for the provision of daily-use items on reasonable rates and in a respectable manner.
