RAWALPINDI, June 30: The Rawal and Potohar towns here on Thursday approved their annual budgets for the fiscal year 2011-12.

In the Rs1.1 billion surplus budget of Rawal Town; Rs334.650 million have been allocated for non-development expenditures, including Rs164 million for establishment, Rs144 million for contingency/services and commodities and Rs26 million for miscellaneous.

According to the budget documents, approved by town administrator Saif Anwar Jappa, the total receipts during the fiscal year are expected to stand at Rs454 million while the opening balance amounted to Rs333.554 million.

The documents showed a surplus of Rs69 million.

The lion's share - Rs778.537 million - of the budget has been allocated for development projects. An amount of Rs384 million remained in the accounts of the TMA as unused development funds while Rs453.4 million was allocated for the new fiscal year.

Strangely, the TMA also allocated Rs20 million for the purchase, service and replacement of officers' cars.

Out of the development budget, Rs14 million were earmarked for repair and maintenance, Rs10 million for pensioners and Rs11 million for improvement and installation of streetlights.

An amount of Rs394 million has been earmarked for development projects to be launched through the citizens community boards.

A sum of Rs5.7 million has been allocated for sports, Rs3 million for interest-free loans to employees for house construction.

Potohar Town: Administrator Talat Mehmood Gondal also approved the annual surplus budget with a total outlay of Rs718 million.

A sum of Rs129 million has been allocated for non-development expenditures, including Rs93 million for establishment, Rs30 million for contingency/services and Rs6 million.

An amount of Rs587 million has been set aside for development projects. During the fiscal year 2010-11, the TMA failed to utilise the development budget and CCBs fund worth 158 million. This year, CCB funds have been increased to Rs335 million.— Amir Yasin
