LAHORE, June 26: An elderly man and his young son were killed while another person was injured in a firing by their rivals in Kot Kamboh locality in Nawankot here on Sunday.

Police said the apparent motive for the attack was the murder litigation.

Police said lumbardar Malik Ashraf was present outside his house along with his son Malik Azhar and friend Sufi Muhammad Hussain when his rival Yaqoob Jutt came there with his two accomplices and fired at them. Consequently, Ashraf, 63, and his son Azhar, 30, died on the spot while Hussain sustained injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital. The attackers fled the scene.

Iqbal Town SP (Operations) Muntazir Mehdi said the preliminary investigation revealed that Yaqoob, who was nominated in a murder case of Ashraf's son Malik Baber in 2005, had been pressing Ashraf for reconciliation for the last few weeks. However, Ashraf wanted to pursue the case against Yaqoob, his sons and nephews.

The SP said Yaqoob and Ashraf had several cases of murder registered against each other in the last few years.

He said Ashraf was released from jail in connection with a murder case a few days ago.

Burki police said 40-year-old Safia was gunned down allegedly by two relatives over children's quarrel in Phularwan locality here on Sunday.

Police said Safia was present in her house when Liaquat Ali, brother of Safia's husband, and his son Waqas opened fire on her and fled.

Quoting the family, police said Safia and Liaquat had exchanged harsh words after their children quarreled with each other a couple of days ago. Police have registered a murder case against the two accused on the complaint of Safia's husband Muhammad Amanat.
