LAHORE, June 6: The Lahore High Court admitted for hearing a writ petition on Monday challenging the constitution of a judicial commission to look into the Abbottabad operation and sought a reply from the federal government by the last week of this month.

Petitioner Rana Ilamudin Ghazi stated the government had constituted the judicial commission headed by Justice Javed Iqbal in violation of a resolution passed by parliament.

He said as per the resolution, the commission would be formed in consultation with the opposition leader in the National Assembly, but the government ignored the mandatory procedures.

The petitioner said an independent commission, led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, should be constituted as the whole nation had full confidence in him.

He said Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani should also be summoned to the court to explain his position as he had called the Abbottabad operation a historic victory.

He prayed that the constitution of the commission be declared illegal and directions be issued to the government to form a new one headed by the chief justice. — Staff Reporter
