KARACHI: Anti-polio campaign begins

Published October 23, 2002

KARACHI, Oct 22: The three-day national immunisation campaign against polio began in the metropolis here on Tuesday with teams of vaccinators visiting pre-primary schools and houses to give polio drops to children below five years of age.

An estimated 18.4 million kids are also to be administered Vitamin A drops during the three-day exercise, from Oct 22 to 24.

EPI authorities told APP that some 18,000 mobiles teams have been constituted while there also exists a provision for 2,000 fixed centres.

Street kids and child-beggars along with other children, falling in the risk group, are being particularly covered this time.

For the very purpose and also to make local parents and guardians realise the significance of the exercise, the city and town councillors are also being involved.

Parents are being particularly assured that repeated dosage of polio drops do not cause any harm but enhances the immunity of the recipients.—APP
