KARACHI, Oct 22: The All Pakistan Newspapers Society has expressed its grief and shock over the killing of Shahid Soomro, a correspondent of a Sindhi daily, while resisting attempt to kidnap him in Kandhkot.

APNS Secretary-General Kazi Asad Abid, in a statement, said on Tuesday that the APNS had noted with concern that the incidents of harassment and threat to life of journalists had become rampant in Sindh, specially in the rural areas. This situation is alarming for the functioning of the press in the country.

Demanding protection for the journalists and arrest of the suspect named in the FIR for Mr Soomro’s killing, he said the press freedom was essential for the successful functioning of a democratic society.
