KARACHI, Oct 20: Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has welcomed the announcement of the vice-president of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, Qazi Hussain Ahmad, to set up separate educational institutions for women.

In a statement faxed from London, Mr Hussain said the establishment of separate schools, colleges and universities for girls would certainly help enhance literacy rate in the country.

The MQM chief, however, advised the MMA leader to reconsider their decision to do away with the co-education system and instead bring reforms in the co-educational institutions for ensuring social reforms and to protect eastern culture and values.

The abolition of the co-education system would lead to a new crisis as millions of girl students are studying in different educational institutions along with boys, likewise hundreds of women have been working side-by-side with men in government, semi-government and private organizations.

“Would the MMA terminate the services of the women as was witnessed after the establishment of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan?” Mr Hussain asked.

Speaking at the Khursheed Begum Memorial Hall in Azizabad on Sunday night to the newly elected members of the national and provincial assemblies, Sattar said the Muttahida Qaumi Movement believed in the supremacy of justice, political stability, and democracy.
