ISLAMABAD, May 3: Seven sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors have been suspended for corruption and misuse of power while serving in the Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC), police said.

At least 80 other officials, including DSPs, inspectors, sub-inspectors and head constables, have also been issued show cause notices for misconduct during their deployment in the cell. Senior Superintendent of Police Tahir Alam Khan has suspended the SIs and ASIs and issued the show cause notices to policemen who have served in the ACLC during the last three years.

Earlier, the Deputy Inspector General of Police had ordered an inquiry against the ACLC officials. The inquiry, conducted by Assistant Superintendent of Police Rizwan Gondal, said the ACLC’s officials did not make inventory of recovered vehicles, which led to gradual stealing of their accessories. The cell’s officials submitted forged reports in the court as the recovered vehicles were given to other people, instead of real owners, according to the probe.

The inquiry report said in some instances the stolen and tampered vehicles were given back to the people from whom they were recovered, instead of impounding them or registering a case. It revealed that the ACLC’s officials deliberately did not conduct forensic tests of stolen and tampered vehicles, did not hand them to ‘concerned police station’ and efforts were not made to reach the owners. It said the cell’s officials favoured the culprits arrested for stealing vehicles by preparing weak cases, leading to their release. Some vehicles, according to the probe, were sold by the officials.—Staff Reporter
