KARACHI, Mar 17: A police officer and his teenage son were gunned down inside their New Karachi home on Thursday, officials said. They said at least three gunmen stormed into the house of Sub-Inspector Iqbal Nazir in Sector 5C-1 when he was sleeping after night duty.

“The armed men knocked at the door of SI Iqbal's home in the first half of the day,” said an official at the Khawaja Ajmair Nagri police station. “A female member of the family opened the door and found two of the armed men. When they asked about Iqbal, she said he was not at home.”

However, he said, the armed men stormed in and found Iqbal sleeping in a room. They fired at him and were returning when Umair, a 19-year-old son of Iqbal, screamed and confronted them, he added.

“According to witnesses, one of the armed men tried to overpower Umair, but failed and fired at him. He sustained two bullet wounds and died on the spot,” said the official, adding that the double murder suspects escaped within a few minutes after executing the job though their mode of transport could not be established.

The officer was associated with the investigation section of the Orangi Town police for the past few years, living in New Karachi for seven years. Though the investigators sounded convinced while declaring enmity as a reason behind the officer's murder, they remained unable to trace the exact motive that led to such a step from the attackers.

“It seems purely a case of enmity, but it has yet to be determined what the reasons of this enmity are –– personal or due to his profession,” said SP Karamullah Soomro of New Karachi Town.

Meanwhile, police in Pak Colony found the body of a young man with multiple bullet wounds and severe torture marks on it, officials said.

“The body was spotted by some sanitary workers lying near Bismillah Hotel, close to Bengali Para –– a low-income neighbourhood,” said an official at the Pak Colony police station. “The victim was wearing jeans and a shirt. He was hit by three bullets and there were multiple torture marks.”

He said the body was shifted to the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth for want of identification after medico-legal formalities at the Civil Hospital Karachi.
