CHAKWAL, Jan 27: The Punjab University has refused to accept the registration forms of MA English students of local Government Postgraduate College on the ground that they did not obtain mandatory 45 per cent marks in the subject in BA, Dawn has learnt through highly credible sources.

The ‘cruel condition’ and college administration’s inability to take up the issue with the university properly has left the students high and dry. The college administration gave admission to 26 students in MA English in September last year and they were taking their classes regularly.

The students got a shock when they received their rejected forms as nobody had told them at the time of admission about the new condition of the university.

“Every one of us had paid the admission fee to the college administration as we were admitted as regular students. No one had told us at the time of admission that we were not eligible as regular candidate for MA English exam,” a student on the condition of anonymity told Dawn.

He said that even after the rejection of their admission forms they were still regular students of the university.

When contacted, the principal of the college Prof Dr Sajjad Ahmad said that all was happened due to an untimely change in the rules by the Punjab University.

“At one time we were told that students having 40 per cent marks in English subject of BA could be given admission in the college. But later we were told about the condition of 45 per cent marks,” Dr Sajjad maintains. He said at the time of admission there was no such condition of 45 per cent marks.

Prof Hafiz Akhtar, the head of English Department, said the students had given an undertaking that they would not hold the college administration responsible for rejection of registration form by the university. Government Postgraduate College Chakwal produces 10 to 15 postgraduate in English every year.
