KARACHI, Jan 24: A suspect booked in a fraud case escaped from the city courts upon the dismissal of his pre-arrest bail application on Monday. He slipped out of the building without facing any resistance from the police force present there.

Asim Anwar had filed his pre-arrest bail application through his lawyer in the sessions court.

Granting him interim bail at the previous hearing, the court had asked him to appear on Jan 24 to seek confirmation of the bail. On Monday, additional district and sessions judge (south) Jangu Khan dismissed the plea after hearing arguments from both sides.

As soon as the court pronounced the order, the suspect slipped away despite the presence of the investigation officer of his case.

According to the prosecution, the suspect had collected Rs190,000 each from Mohammad Ismail and Fariduddin for providing them government jobs. Later, he gave them ‘appointment letters’. However, when they went to the department concerned, an official told them that the appointment letters were bogus.

A case was registered against the suspect under Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Boat Basin police station.

Confession statement A police constable on Monday confessed to have ‘unintentionally’ killed his teenage friend a couple of weeks ago in the Mehmoodabad area.

Amir Butt, who was posted at the Baghdadi police station, recorded his confessional statement under Section 164 of criminal procedure code in the court of a judicial magistrate.

The suspect deposed that on Jan 9, he and his friends Waqas and Adil were drunk when Waqas asked for the pistol he was carrying. On his refusal, Waqas tried to snatch it and during the ensuing struggle, the gun went off, leaving Waqas dead.

He told the court that he felt guilty and surrendered himself to the police.

After recording the statement, the court remanded him in judicial custody.

According to the prosecution, the victim was killed on Jan 9 and his body found dumped in a drain near Defence View. The victim’s father nominated Amir and Adil as accused in the FIR.

A case (09/2011) was registered against them under Section 302 (punishment for qatl-i-amd) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Mehmoodabad police station.
