KARACHI: Removal of KU VC demanded

Published October 4, 2002

KARACHI, Oct 3: Expressing no confidence in their vice chancellor, about 290 teachers of the University of Karachi, in a joint petition to the varsity’s chancellor — the governor of Sindh — have demanded for his immediate removal from the post.

The 290 signatories of the petition included senior professors, present and former chairpersons, directors of many departments and institutes of the university, as well as sitting and former members of the KU Syndicate and current and former advisors, said a KUTS press release.

KUTS has been protesting over the alleged administrative collapse on the campus when the situation turned ugly on September 7, when a number of university teachers and students, including females, were baton-charged by Rangers personnel deployed there. The chancellor had also held meetings with teachers’ representatives, and certain measures were promised in order to pacify the situation. But these efforts came to no avail, as teachers are still demanding the removal of the vice chancellor.

The signatories expressed the view that the vice chancellor was responsible for the present state of affairs on campus.
