KARACHI, Jan 6: Judicial magistrates at the city courts on Thursday remanded seven suspected militants in police custody in nine murder cases and extended their remand in 11 other cases till Jan 11.

Tanveer Abbas Rizvi alias Kashif, Abrar Hussain Rizvi, Syed Pervaiz Zaidi, Rifat Raza alias Jehangir, Hasnain Abbas alias Faisal, Syed Sikandar Rizvi and Syed Ali Mehdi said to be associated with a proscribed outfit, Sipah-i-Muhammad, have been booked in nine more cases by the crime investigation department and different police stations.

The CID obtained the physical remand of the suspects in three cases (375/10, 633/10 and 169/10), including the murder case of Dr Javed Shakoor who was gunned down on Aug 8, 2010, registered at the Mominabad, Nazimabad and New Karachi Industrial Area police stations.

The investigation sections of different police stations also got their remand in six murder cases.

The judicial magistrates of different courts, meanwhile, extended the physical remand of the same set of suspects in 11 cases pertaining to murder, attempted murder, possessing illicit weapons and explosives, and encounter with police till Jan 11.

According to the prosecution, the Special Investigation Unit of police apprehended the suspects in Gulshan-i-Iqbal and Gulistan-i-Jauhar after shootouts with them and recovered unlicensed weapons and explosive material on Jan 2 and booked them in nine cases under Sections 353, 324 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code, 13-D of the Arms Ordinance and 4/5 of the Explosive Substance Act.

The SIU also got extension in the physical remand of the suspects in two murder cases registered the Khawaja Ajmer Nagri and Sir Syed police stations.
