KARAK, Dec 8: A woman and a man were killed, and eight other persons injured, in an encounter between police and criminals in Warana area of the district on Tuesday night.

Police said that the encounter took place when it raided the house of Rahmatullah, a kidnapper in its custody, to arrest his accomplice and outlaw Mumtaz and met resistance.

They said Mumtaz, and Rahmatullah’s sister Bibi Aasia, were killed in the encounter. Those injured included two policemen and four women.

Police said that Mumtaz and his accomplices hurled hand grenades at the raiding party and opened indiscriminate firing, injuring SHO Mohammad Riaz, ASI Hakeem Khan and women and children, present in the house.

A woman, identified as Bibi Asia, the sister of Rahmatullah, was killed on the spot, while Sheraza, wife of Rahmatullah, Shehnaza, wife of Hazrat Usman, wife of Saddique, wife of Amal Rahman, Shaheeda, the daughter of Hazrat Usman and five year old Zeenat, daughter of Ahmad Khan, were injured.

Police killed Mumtaz in retaliation and arrested his four accomplices identified as Amal Rahman, Abdur Rahman, Wazir Badshah and Ameerullah. Another outlaw, Abdul Muneer, managed to escape, they added.

Police also recovered two hand grenades, one Kalashnikov, two pistols and ammunition from the house.

The injured were shifted to district headquarters hospital in Karak from where doctors referred SHO Riaz to Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar in precarious condition.

Later, District Police Officer Sajid Mohmand told a press conference that operation against anti-social elements would continue. He said that Mumtaz was a close aide of the ringleader of kidnappers Rahmatullah, who was arrested some months ago in Karachi.

He said that Mumtaz was wanted by police in nine cases of murder, kidnapping and other heinous crimes.
