ISLAMABAD, Nov 24: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed on Wednesday a reference in an accountability court of Peshawar against former inspector general of police of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Commandant of Frontier Constabulary (FC) Malik Naveed. In the reference, Mr Naveed and some FC officials have been accused of misusing their powers by appointing more than 700 people in the FC.

Mr Naveed is reported to have gone abroad to escape arrest and a senior NAB official said that if the Bank of Punjab’s former chief Hamesh Khan could be brought back to the country then NAB could seek Interpol’s help to get hold of the former IGP.

A meeting of NAB’s executive board held on Wednesday also ordered filing of three more references and initiating five inquires against officials and individuals in different corruption cases.

The references will be against the management of Gulshan-i-Latif Housing Scheme in Karachi, the former Medical Superintendent of Karachi’s Civil Hospital, Dr Mirza Raza Ali, and his associates for allegedly misappropriating medicines and Muhammad Hassan Baloch, Labour Welfare Commissioner of Mines and Mineral Department, Balochistan.

One such inquiry was ordered against the Innovative Investment Bank for depriving the government of a huge amount of money.

The meeting authorised NAB’s Punjab office to conduct an inquiry against Advocate Dr Abdul Basit for keeping public money in his accounts in the ‘Double Shah’ scam on the pretext that he himself would make refunds to the affected people.

Another inquiry was ordered against Mr Maudood Ahmad Lodhi, former chairman of NICL, for alleged gross misuse of authority and for causing a loss of millions of rupees to the public exchequer.
