Canadian support for flood-hit

CHARSADDA/NOWSHERA, Nov 14: Canadian Member of Parliament of Pakistani origin Senator Salma Attaullah Jan has said that the Canadian government has enhanced financial assistance of the flood stricken people from $10 million to $52 million.

She was speaking at a function held to distribute cash compensation among the flood affected families in Charsadda district on Sunday. The Canadian MP also went to Nowshera district and distributed financial assistance among the affected families.

Senator Salma Attaullah said that the Canadian government would soon start reconstruction of bridges in the flood-hit areas, besides extending more support to the people.

The material for the reconstruction of bridges had reached Karachi, she added.

She said that the Canadian citizens of Pakistani origin had not forgotten the flood victims of Pakistan. They would contribute generously to relieve the suffering of the people, she said.

She said that the Pakistanis were striving to improve the image of the country in Canada. The Canadian citizens and government would continue to support the flood victims, she said. —Dawn Report

Teachers’ body elections

TIMERGARA, Nov 14: Sahibzada Sadiq Jan of Hayaserai has been elected as president while Mushtaq-ur-Rahman as general secretary of the Tanzeem-i-Asatiza, Lower Dir, for the next term, says a press release issued here on Sunday.

The annual election was held at Allah-o-Akbar mosque here on Sunday. The provincial president of the organisation Fazal Aziz supervised the election.

All permanent members of the Tanzeem-i-Asatiza, a Jamaat-i-Islami-backed teachers organisation, took part through secret ballots. According to the results Abdul Hameed Nasri was elected as vice-president, Rahmanul Mulk finance secretary, Abdul Hameed Jan joint secretary and Abdul Khaliq secretary information.

Meanwhile, Waqif Mohammad, Haji Rooh Zamin Khan and Mian Shah Zaman Shah were elected as members of the executive council, the press release said. —Correspondent

Six suspects arrested

CHARSADDA, Nov 14: Police arrested six people on charges of rocket attack on the residence of Commissioner Kohat Division Khalid Umerzai in Charsadda on Sunday.

A rocket fired from unknown location hit outer wall of the commissioner’s personal residence in Umerzai area on Saturday night.

Police said that two rockets were fired which caused partial damage to the building.

District Police Officer Nisar Ali Marwat said the arrested persons were being interrogated. —Correspondent

Soldiers’ bodies

PESHAWAR, Nov 14: A spokesman for Frontier Corps has clarified a news item appeared in Dawn, saying that the militants had not taken into custody the body of one of the two soldiers who died in a clash with militants in Mohmand Agency.

The spokesman termed the report as baseless and misleading that the militants had taken away the body of one of the two soldiers who were killed during the clash.

He said that both the bodies were in the custody of the security forces and had been dispatched to their hometowns for burial. —Bureau Report
