KARACHI, Aug 22: On the directive of City Nazim Naimatullah Khan, the 10-day citywide cleanliness campaign was launched on Thursday by all the city government organizations.

Naimatullah Khan started the campaign by cleaning parts of the University Road in Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town. He visited various union councils of the town and reviewed the cleanliness campaign. Later he also visited various areas in Jamshed Town.

Talking to newsmen In Mahmoodabad, the city Nazim said the city government was committed to make the city “green and clean”. He further said that a tree plantation campaign had also been started, which would continue simultaneously with the cleanliness drive.

EDO health Dr Ali Nawaz Sheikh and four DOs of the department planted a sapling each at Ojha Institute to mark the cleanliness and beautification campaign.

The city government has made elaborate arrangements for the campaign which will continue till the 31st of August. About 1000 banners will be displayed in the city. A chartered plane has also been arranged to drop 800,000 leaflets regarding the importance of cleanliness in Islam, with an estimated cost of Rs80,000.

The work and services department will extend its expertise and facilities including heavy machinery to towns and UCs. Roads will be improved and streetlights made functional. The department will also help towns in channelising drains and provide them with the required machinery.

EDUCATION: EDO Education, Prof Raees Alvi has directed the educational institutions of the city government to devote fifteen minutes to help improve their sanitary conditions and assist in beautification. It has been further directed that one sapling each by students,teachers and staffs be planted at their institutions.—PPI/APP

SADDAR TOWN: The administration of Saddar Town on Thursday claimed to have lifted 130 tons of garbage and debris from different areas on the first day of the special cleanliness drive, adds our reporter.

The campaign was launched from the Pakistan Chowk and it covered the area up to the Clifton Bridge. More than 1300 sanitary workers took part in the campaign.

At the outset of the campaign, the Nazim of the town pledged to make the town a model one. He also made an impassioned appeal to the people to make the plantation drive a success and create a pollution-free environment.
