ISLAMABAD Wapda, Police and Islamabad thrashed their opponents on the first day of the 9th Benazir Bhutto National Women's Volleyball Championship at the Pakistan Sports Complex here on Monday.

Teams from Wapda, Pakistan Education Boards (PEB), Higher Education Commission (HEC), Balochistan, Punjab, Police, NWFP, Islamabad and Sindh would test their mettle in the four-day event.In the opening match defending champions Wapda outclassed PEB 3-0 to register their first victory in the event. The match's first set saw Wapda's ace spikers put in their major share to win the set 25-8.

Wapda manoeuvred its strategy in the second set by making use of various quick combinations, leaving the opponent helpless in the block and defense field and clinching the second set 25-8.

In the final set, the blue shirts did not give any room to their opponents lifting the match 3-0 scoring 25-9 in the third set.

In another event, Police thrashed Punjab by registering a straight set 3-0 victory.

Police clinched the three-set game against Punjab 25-16, 25-7 and 25-12. Meanwhile, in the days last fixture Islamabad won an easy contest against Sindh 25-17, 25-22 and 25-10.
