KARACHI, Aug 10: Various parts of the city’s sprawling townships — Orangi and Baldia — and SITE industrial area either went dry or received scanty supply of water on Saturday due to reduced water supply from the Hub Dam reservoir.

Complaints of acute water shortage have also been received from several sectors of North Karachi and Surjani Town, which are currently being supplied water from the Indus source via the Ajmair Nagri pumping station.

Attributing the persisting water shortage in Orangi and Baldia Towns to the short supply of water from the Hub Dam, sources admitted that the KWSB’s concerned officials have not been able to ensure an equitable distribution of water to Orangi, Baldia, SITE and different sectors of North Karachi and Surjani Towns in the wake of reduced quantity of water being supplied to the city from the Hub source.

“In accordance with a decision taken recently by the Hub Water Supply Committee’s chairman, the city is to get 45 million gallons (mgd) of water per day for three consecutive days from the Hub source. The Wapda officials, responsible for releasing water in the Hub canal, have supplied a little over eight mgd of water during the last two days,” the KWSB officials said, adding that the city had started getting its supply from the Hub source at 6.30pm on Friday and it had received only a little over eight mgd till 6.30pm on Saturday.

Accusing the Wapda officials of violating the decision taken at the level of Hub Water Supply Committee, the KWSB sources urged the senior officials of Wapda to strictly abide by the committee’s decision or otherwise they would not be able to manage the water supply position of Orangi, Baldia, Site and different sectors of North Karachi and Surjani Towns.
