LARKANA, Aug 7: A 50-feet-wide breach developed in the Dadu Canal which inundated 1,000 acres of paddy crops and flooded three villages near Yaroo Lakhir, Dokri, on Wednesday.

A villager, Abdul Sattar Junejo, told this correspondent that the breach developed due to the utter negligence of irrigation officials who did not heed their complaint when they first saw the breach when it was only three-feet wide.

He further said had they plugged the breach at that time there would not have been such huge losses.

The villagers from Seeri Allahdad Bungla, Mehar Junejo, and Aakhiro Junejo, took shelter on the Right Bank of the Dadu Canal after their villages were flooded.

The villagers accused the irrigation officials for arriving late at the site, while the officials themselves disputed the claim.

The district Nazim, Khursheed Junejo, the district coordination officer, Noor Ali Khan, and the DPO, Abdul Sattar Detho, arrived at the site to personally supervise the relief work.

Mr Khursheed told newsmen that the breach had developed due to tampering.

He said that he had ordered an inquiry regarding the breach.

The villagers, who were helping the irrigation staff in plugging the breach, demanded the government to grant them relief in land revenue collection as their entire crops had been damaged.

The district Nazim assured them that relief would be provided to them.

Two constables killed: A gang of dacoits killed two head constables, and stole their Kalashnikov and motorcycle about five kms from Ratodero town on Wednesday.

The two head constables, Abdul Karim and Rahim Bakhsh, were returning to their police station on their motorcycle after meeting the DSP, Ratodero, when the dacoits, who were hiding behind some bushes, opened fire killing them on the spot.

The dacoits stole their Kalashnikov and fled on their motorcycle.

The DPO, Larkana, Abdul Sattar Detho, along with a heavy police party had encircled sugar cane fields near the Deenar village where the dacoits had taken shelter.

BOY DROWNS: A boy, Dilshad Khokhar, drowned in the Mumtaz Minor, near Ratodero, on Wednesday.
