JERUSALEM, Jan 27 A man hurled a shoe at Israel's supreme court president on Wednesday, hitting her in the head and knocking her over during proceedings.

The shoe hit judge Dorit Beinisch, 67, on the forehead and nose, breaking her glasses, her husband Yeheskiel Beinisch told public radio.

Beinisch received treatment in her chambers before returning to applause in the court about an hour after the incident.

“This moves me more than what happened earlier,” she told the court.

A man in his fifties stood up during the session and hurled a pair of sneakers, yelling “corrupt” and “rotten,” the radio said.

Bailiffs seized the man, who apparently felt wronged by an earlier court decision, media said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, visiting Poland, called Beinisch to express his shock at the attack.

“It's forbidden to attack the courts and unthinkable that someone would harm the president of the supreme court,” his office quoted him as saying.

In the best known such incident, Iraqi journalist Muntazer al Zaidi threw two shoes at then US president George Bush on Dec 14, 2008, during his farewell visit to Baghdad. He missed in both cases.
