PESHAWAR, Aug 6: The Chairman of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Afrasiab Khattak, has expressed concern over targeting of Christian school in Murree by gunmen and has said the incident also showed that minorities still faced threat.

He said despite the claims by the government that law and order had been improved, the threats still haunted the people across the country, said an HRCP press release on Tuesday.

He said it was extremely unfortunate on the part of the government to protect the minorities from such mishaps despite repeated warning from the minorities to protect them against the threats. The death of six persons in the attack was apparently directed by extremists. he said it also exposed the ineptness of the government and that the extremists could strike any time and at any place. These acts, he said was a source of continuous threats to the minority people living in the country.

The HRCP chairman said he was shocked over the Murree incident heightened danger to many other schools, hospitals and other centres run by the Christian community in the country. Mr Khattak said it would be in the fitness of things if the government took swift and strict action against those perpetrating such barbaric acts in order to protect the lives of the citizens. He said countless people had been killed earlier by the terrorists with their families still being suffered.

Mr Khattak said in the longer run, only an improvement in the worsening status of minorities can prevent them from being falling victims to such attacks carried out within the society. He said all sorts of discrimination against the minorities should be eliminated and steps must be taken to ensure their safety and the protection of their most basic rights as citizens of Pakistan.
