LAHORE, Aug 4: Former Olympian Munir Dar Sunday demanded the top Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) officials, team management, should quit after the 7-1 humiliation by New Zealand at Commonwealth Games semifinals in Manchester.

“They (the PHF hierarchy and team officials), should accept the responsibility of the disaster and have no right to carry on. They should submit their resignations and leave,” Munir said.

Criticising coach Tahir Zaman, he said how could he train his players to get rid of the marker when he himself could not deceive the marker.

He was referring to Tahir’s performance at national championship’s semifinal where the coach represented his department National Bank but hardly touched the ball because of the marker.

“Did the PHF watch Tahir playing at the national championship. How he (Tahir) is expected to teach his trainees when he himself does not know how to tackle the marker,” he contended.

He was also critical of recalling the two seniors — Kamran Ashraf and Ahmad Alam and argued there was no wisdom in inviting the goalkeeper, especially after he had retired because of poor performance.

Munir contended the team should have played with 3-4-3 combination rather than 5-3-2 suggested by Tahir.

Khawaja Junaid, a former national coach, also termed the drubbing by the Kiwis a total disaster.

“The defeat is surely a black spot in Pakistan hockey’s history. But we have to play the Champions Trophy and Asian Games for which we should prepare,” he said.

Junaid agreed the PHF, in a bid to add a title, had been using short cuts, instead of long term planning that resulted in team’s thrashing.

He suggested the team should return home rather than train in Manchester for the Trophy in Cologne, Germany later this month.

“It will be better to come back to make the changes and then play the Trophy,” said former international.

Junaid said remarks by the manager Col Zafar Ali Khan that an inquiry about activity of the players before the game against New Zealand would be held, should be taken into notice.
