BISLEY (England), Aug 2: Anjali Bhagwat won her fourth gold medal of the Commonwealth Games and her country’s 11th of the shooting competition when she took victory in the women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions singles event here on Friday.
The 31-year-old from Bombay took the title with a score of 678.0 points with teammate Raj Kumari taking silver with 662.2 while Roslina Bakar of Malaysia won bronze with 662.2.
Bhagwat added that she hoped India’s shooting successes at the Games would encourage more young people at home to take up the sport.
Northern Ireland’s David Calvert won the open full bore singles title to add to the pairs crown he picked up last week.
“I am absolutely delighted, it really is beyond my expectations and to hit a personal best of 404.62 points is very satisfying,” added Calvert who has now won four Commonwealth golds in his career.
He won gold in Victoria in 1994 as well as Kuala Lumpur in 1998 and picked up two bronzes in Brisbane in 1982 and Edinburgh in 1986.
Calvert scored 404.62pts to take gold with David Dodds of South Africa winning silver with 403.53 and Diane Collings of New Zealand finishing third with 402.54.
Canada’s Metodi Igorov took gold in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event and then bemoaned his poor preparation for the Games.
Australia’s Bruce Quick took silver with 667.7 and South Africa’s Allan McDonald the bronze with 666.3.—Reuters
