KARACHI, July 29: Clifton’s Boat Basin, where major restaurants and food points are located, will be modified into a food street. For this task, the Trade Association of Boat Basin will be provided all possible administrative and technical assistance to implement this scheme.

This was decided at a meeting of civic agencies and line departments of the government of Sindh, city district government, and the representatives of the Pakistan Tanners Association and Boat Basin Traders Association at the EPA Complex in Korangi on Sunday.

Presiding over the meeting, the DCO Karachi, Shafique-ur- Rehman Paracha, assigned the task of “Project Proposal of Food Street” to the Boat Basin Traders Association, and asked them to submit it in the next meeting to be held on August 6, 2002.

He said that the purpose of this scheme should be to provide the people of they city hygienic, quality food of all varieties with a flavour of cultural and traditional cuisine.

TANNERIES: In his opening remarks, the DG Sindh EPA pointed out the delay in the installation of the Combined Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) for tanneries. It was decided that a common letter would be issued to all tanners for their contribution in the installation of the CETP, and notices would be served to those who would not pay their share to implement this project.

It was also decided that for the beautification of the Chamra Chowrangi of the Korangi Industrial Area, a proposal would be initiated in the next meeting to beautify the area on a self-help basis. The cooperation of local industries would be sought for establishing a park at the roundabout, and for the cover of tanners nullah, which gives off an oozing smell and creates a nuisance for the public.— APP
