KARACHI, July 14: Incidents of thefts and robberies in Steel Town are on the rise, and the area police station is short of staff and has no vehicle, which could have helped in containing the growing crime situation there.

Police reach the crime scene mostly after an hour or two, said Aziz-ur-Rahman Memon and Dada Muhammad Ali Bozdar, social workers and councillors of Gulshan-i-Hadeed.

The police station of Steel Town was set up in 1990 to ensure security mainly to Pakistan Steel’s residential areas, located at least 40km off the main city.

The area councillors, Aziz Memon and Dada M. A. Bozdar, said that only in the last week of June, 25 incidents of thefts and robberies were had occurred. “In broad daylight robberies of houses, passenger buses and coaches were reported just outside Gulshan-i-Hadeed last month.”

The area Nazim, Ghulam Raza Jatoi, has been writing to higher authorities to seek at least three police mobile vans and more staff to improve the functioning of the police station. But the problem stands un-resolved, the councillors said.—APP
